SPN 8.15: Man's Best Friend with Benefits

On the plus side: Dean's fear of dogs is canon. He's apparently allergic to cats, which makes me DDDDD: in all the saddest/best ways. He has Kate the werewolf's name ready to hand, which makes me :DDDDD.

On the downside: I want to beat this episode to death with a shovel. I hated every single thing this episode did with gender, starting with watching a hooker get choked to death in the opening scene, right down to the whole plot revolving two male witches' ownership of the only significant female character in the episode. Let's not even go into how we always let the male witches go (swoony Irish dude, Don Stark, James) and kill all the nasty girl witches.

Edit: And also race. Dude. Black woman wears a collar and calls white man master? IT'S LIKE A PARODY. LAUGH OR YOU'LL SOB YOUR EYES OUT.

Sometime I should say something about 8.14, which I actually liked quite well. Another day, I guess.

I have not seen many episode reactions online yet, I wonder if I should assume there are more people just going "what the actual fuck?" and unable to summon the words...

Yeah, yay for fear of dogs being canon, but oh my fucking god for so much of that episode. I admit I was going "oh... I'm really, really not too sure about this" from the preview clip, which was the bit where she shows up at the motel, if you hadn't seen it. I thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt, because I thought Aaron and the Golem went well in the end, but. No. No, that started bad and got worse.

I am heartened by the responses on my flist, which, yes, tend to be mostly of the "WTF?" variety.

Honestly, I was still thinking of new bad things about the ep long after it finished.

Apparently this one made an impact, because I woke up, stretched, and then went "why the hell was the collar the only piece of 'clothing' that stayed in place?!" and then went straight back to "people had to sign off on all this stuff" D:.

He's apparently allergic to cats, which makes me DDDDD: in all the saddest/best ways.

D: I was not pleased by that. It reminded me how much we split the world into cliched dichotomies because previously it had been easy to assume that if Dean was Not A Dog Person, then he was probably A Cat Person. But apparently Dean is just not an animal person period.

True to my one-track mind, I'm just like, "whatever headcanon!Dean of mine, your girlfriend owns a cat and you occasionally clean its litter box, suck it up."

He has Kate the werewolf's name ready to hand, which makes me :DDDDD.

I thought of you when they said her name!! I was like, Snick's gonna like that they remember her.

AND IT'S EVEN BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Not only should this episode not exist in the first place, but they could not have picked a worse time to air it if they TRIED. WHAT THE EVERLASTING ----

starting with watching a hooker get choked to death in the opening scene

THIS. And how every dead victim was oppressed/a minority? A female hooker, an African American blind man, and the cat-familiar who was coded gay (if I read it correctly). WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, SPN.

I miss Sera Gamble.

Well, it's not like Dean just has personal preferences re: no animals. He's allergic to cats, and (headcanon) he's scared of dogs. Poor Dean. :(

AND IT'S EVEN BLACK HISTORY MONTH.

And my options remain the same: laugh or cry.

It's not like Sera Gamble's SPN didn't have its off days, but this badness was EPIC.

Ugh, sounds like I should skip this one. I just downloaded it, but I have less than no desire to see any of what you describe here.

Is there any overarching S8 plot relevance? I might just shove this one in the box with Time for a Wedding and that one where they go to a Supernatural Con, and pretend they don't exist.

There is no overarching S8 plot relevance. I recommend you skip. You will be a happier person.

(That said, I actually really like the SPN con ep - I think the two fans are treated seriously, rather than as jokes. They get to save the day, even! Like in Galaxy Quest! But then I like the meta stuff, so.)

This is one of those eps where you go in knowing it's going to suck and then it fails to prove you wrong. Disappointing and yet...not?

Straight to #1 on my Worst Episodes of Supernatural list. And I'd have to think about the others, apart from "Season 7, Time for a Wedding", obviously.

I liked the dog. I liked Sam patting the dog, although that was badly shot--very obvious that the shots of Sam's face were made without the dog on set. As a redeeming feature, it's not much, is it?

So disappointed. I actually checked mid-watch to see whether the writer was someone new, because by 16 minutes in I had lost hope for the episode, but, no, it's a team who've written at least 6 eps incl. this one. I don't say this often, because I know I lack a natural command of American English and the sort of pop culture knowledge Sam and Dean have, but... I really think I could have done better than this. Considerably better. I fail to see how I could have done worse, anyway. :-|

I did like Sam having doggy times, and Sam trying to justify keeping the dog overnight.

Indeed.
