SPN 8.21 The Great Escapist

Just watched SPN. I am a conflicted ball of :DDDDD and DNW. The :DDDDD is mostly Kevin-related; the DNW is, for example, the episode's fixation on storytelling (Crowley, Metatron). Also I'm not thrilled by yet another white male angel (or two, counting Ion). Also this whole thing where Castiel has always disobeyed seems to invalidate all his character development up until now in one fell swoop. (Probably there are a lot of unhappy D/Cers right now? Because it turns out Castiel didn't do it, all of it for Dean? Not that that was ever precisely my interpretation anyway.)

Also I found some of the Dean&Sam writing really cringey, especially the bit in the beginning where Dean's ragging on Sam about taking care of him. What the heck, Ben Edlund?

Also the Grand Canyon thing, obvs. Bleah.

Other thoughts:
* Obviously Meg should be the demon we heal (where by 'cure' I mean 'make not dead') :P

* Naomi calls Castiel "Angel" - like she isn't? I am still willing to speculate as to what exactly she is

* I take it as confirmed that Naomi/intelligence is the "Bible camp" Castiel got sent to in 4.20, and later Anna in whichever ep that was

No way! I mean, okay, it does make that moment of rebellion in 4x22 slightly less meaningful to know Castiel had apparently already been there/done that before, but it doesn't negate his reasons for rebelling in the first place, nor does it erase the impact Anna/Dean/Sam all had on him. How could it?

Yeah, maybe he's got a supposed glitch in the system, but all that would do would give him the means to which he could rebel, it wouldn't give him the incentive. Dean, Sam... they were part of the incentive.

Fair enough! Since I'm not a D/C shipper to begin with, I could only guess at how such folk might feel about this development. I feel that it's something of a cop-out, that it does pull the rug out of some of that previous characterization, but then also I almost can't stand the horror of how many, many times Castiel's mind has apparently been tampered with.

I think 8.19 broke me, though; I feel we are now firmly in the apocrypha of canon, and I have difficulty taking seriously even things I ought to have feelings about (like Sam's speech about feeling tainted even as a kid).
