a/b/o lists

Have updated the epic A/B/O list. (Again. I did it once a few months ago and then accidentally edited all my work back out. Argh.)

I'm wondering, though, if my haphazard collecting is particularly useful these days. I still have a moderately good idea what's happening on the SPN/SPN RPF side of things, and anything Teen Wolfy that [personal profile] verity writes or recs to me, I will read, but I haven't trawled the main a/b/o tag on AO3 in ages. And besides, the trope is so widely dispersed now that people are less likely to be interested in random fanworks for it that aren't in their fandom. Which also suggests that maybe I should rethinks my categorization strategy and try to organize it more for fandom than contents?

IDK. If it can still be useful as something besides a historical artifact, I'd like it be as useful as it can be. If any of y'all ever refer to it and have suggestions, I'd be wide open.

Two things:

1. Your masterlist (of your own fic) is on the SECOND PAGE of results when you search "a/b/o meta fanfiction." This makes me feel like you are famous, though I know it's not what it means. For some reason it tickles me.

2. The reason I was searching the above is because I know someone linked me at some point to a meta breakdown of a/b/o that was basically an a/b/o for dummies guide. I am...kind of starting work on my own, so I wanted to find it, but I can't. Do you happen to know of anything of the sort? I'm pretty sure it was on AO3.

[eta] Never mind on part 2! I found it!

[eta2] Sorry, sorry, but I keep having things I want to ask you about! So my main pairing in my fic is m/m BUT I want to have at least one supporting pairing that's an alpha lady and an omega guy. In reading meta, it seems that most of the time with a/b/o, alpha females end up having penises? Which is interesting, as I did not consider that. It seems that the reason this would be necessary is 1) to make for some nice het mpreg (a worthy goal) or 2) because apparently penetration is correlated with aggression.

However. If I'm not going for mpreg, I can't think of a reason that the lady needs to be the one doing the penetrating? I rather like the idea of a lady being the aggressive one but also being penetrated. The only problem I see with this is that presumably the whole heat/mating thing would have to evolve for a reason, and the reason would probably have something to do with propagating the species. So if the pregnancy possibility is taken out of the equation, what's the point of the alpha female/omega male dynamic in the first place? (Or the alpha female/omega female dynamic, for that matter.)

I hadn't realized how tricky worldbuilding would be in this! Do you have thoughts on this subject, is what I'm asking?

DO I HAVE THOUGHTS. Yes. I am heading to work here soon, but later today, I will have OODLES OF THOUGHTS for you. :D

Also, :DDDDDDD on you writing a/b/o.

I very much look forward to them! Have fun at work!

(I'm weirdly excited about it! And I'm giving you the credit, just as I did when I wrote mpreg. You have a very big influence on your fic-writing friends!)

I'm really quite humbled/ecstatic by the number of people who've written me mpreg over the years. And now I am dragging you all into a/b/o, too. :DDD

I think when you're a really nice person and a really good writer, people are more willing to write for you! I've had some people write things for me and I'm just like, "BUT WHY ARE YOU SO GOOD TO ME?" It's the best!

1. Whoa. I just looked myself up on a search engine, and my fanfiction index came up as the second result. *blinks*

2. There are actually a bunch of a/b/o meta posts on AO3. The ones I've read have all been a bit... limited. Like there's one that says that all a/b/o has soulmates, which is flat not true, or that all a/b/o universes feature mpreg, which is also not true. You get the picture. So anything that someone says an a/b/o verse can have is probably true, but anything they say an a/b/o verse can't have or always has is probably not, because someone has probably written an exception.

3. Haha, lady dicks! You happen to be friends with a crowd of people that tend to like alpha ladies to have dicks, but that's certainly not universal; in fact I'd say maaybe 50% of fics that involve alpha women give them dicks. As you say, I like them for mpreg. :D Other people like them for kink reasons; I think people who write alpha women are more likely than average to enjoy some flavor of femdom. However, sometimes this means that the alpha women don't have dicks but peg their omega partners.

So yeah, generally I've seen a/o relationships involving the alpha penetrating the omega, but actually, I think this is less about penetrator = aggressor than it is about the idea of the omega needing to be penetrated, at least at certain times, like when he/she is in heat. This ties into the knotting aspect of the trope, too - the omega can't be satisfied without a knot, etc. So, like, if I ever write the porny timestamp to this beta!Danneel/omega!Jensen fic I've been posting, Danneel will peg Jensen during his heat, even though Danneel is a beta, so has no natural instincts for it one way or the other, and has never felt much interest in it herself. So I think that's why you'll alphas generally penetrating - it's more because omegas need to be penetrated than anything else. (I think this is actually an interesting thing in general, this emphasis on sex motivated more by the omega's needs than the alpha's, although of course this varies quite a lot from fic to fic.)

All that said, the rule here is that there are no rules. There really isn't any way to do a/b/o wrong, IMO. So you could totally decide that instead omegas want to be dominated, but positions don't matter to them, and that female alphas are totally for receiving but are bossy about it. The sky is the limit, here.

1. I am so delighted by this!

2. Yeah, the one I ended up finding (that I think was the one that I was initially looking for) had a real sense of humor about itself so it was pretty low on the "all" and "can't" statements. But another one I looked at talked about how they all have knotting, and I was like, "Uh. No."

3. The pegging thing is interesting because it would cut down on the spontaneous aspect of a lot of a/b/o. Like, with so many fics it's a BIG SURPRISE that someone suddenly goes into heat, so it's not like a woman can be like, "Hold on for a second, I'm going to go home and get my dildo." So I would assume that in those verses there are fewer alpha females mating with guys? Like, obviously if they're planning to mate, things could work out well. But otherwise I don't even know how it would happen!

it's more because omegas need to be penetrated than anything else

See, and I can easily structure it in my brain as just needing sex itself, rather than penetration. (It still leaves me with the WHY ON EARTH WOULD THIS EVOLVE? question, but I can always ask readers to just go with it.)

So you could totally decide that instead omegas want to be dominated, but positions don't matter to them, and that female alphas are totally for receiving but are bossy about it. The sky is the limit, here.

I really love topping-from-the-bottom dynamics and also like anything that messes up the penetration = aggression/dominating/conquering thing. So I might just go wit this. Thank you!

The pegging thing is interesting because it would cut down on the spontaneous aspect of a lot of a/b/o.

Well, there's always fisting. *cough* But in general, yeah, I would say that these tropes are absolutely not developed with women in mind; it's pretty much always a matter of het and femslash shippers coming in after the fact and saying, "But what about...?"

For the WHY WOULD IT EVOLVE question, nature's pretty weird. I mean, the knotting itself comes from nature, sort of. The question I get stickier on is why a species has two only somewhat compatible reproductive strategies, but, eh. We see all sorts of weird evolutionary relics in our modern-day species; I guess I don't have much trouble taking this one as given and running with it. Which your readers probably will, too. (Although, is there any a/b/o in kpop? You might be marketing to a whole new demographic. :D)

Anyway. Yes. Do what you want, is the point here. :)
