PSA: Comixology has all but the latest issue of Red Sonja on sale today.

--

Last night I dreamed that the new Elektra solo was out, but the entire first issue was about her wandering in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic universe. Interacting with ponies. "Aha," I said to my dream self. "This is why we never got any real preview of the interior art."

Moon Knight #1 - Ellis, Shalvey/Bellaire
Of the writers whom I've read a lot of work from, Warren Ellis is the one I've enjoyed most consistently, by far. Jordie Bellaire is my favorite colorist. I hadn't encountered Declan Shalvey before, but now I quite like him, too!

That said, I'm not sure what to make of the story so far. Moon Knight seems a tricky character to write - he variously represents four different aspects of Khonshu? Whaaat? And possibly also a fifth secret aspect? This first issue is GORGEOUS, though, just as I'd hoped, and I trust Ellis to go somewhere interesting. Carry on.

Captain Marvel #1 - DeConnick, Lopez
Man, I have really mixed feelings about this book. I didn’t get on with the previous volume at all, and I think it may come down to not liking how DeConnick writes Carol, particularly the casual arrogance. I also find her emotionally opaque to the point of having a really hard time relating to her at all.

That said, the quoted bit here was really, really good, and I ADORE the art. Every one of Lopez’s panels is a joy. The style is such a perfect fit for this book, much better than Andrade (right tone, but I can’t stand his faces), Soy (neat look, but way too heavy for this book), or Rios (who Lopez here kind of reminds me of, except Rios’ lines are so much less clean).

So yeah. :\ to Carol, :DDDD to art.

Loki #2 - Ewing, Garbett/Woodard
So try this out: Loki, master of lies + Verity, the girl who always knows when you aren't telling the truth = BUDDY COMEDY. Because I think that might be what we're getting here.

As a counterpoint to Loki, Verity Willis is about the MOST PERFECT THING I CAN IMAGINE, and also she has tattoos and hot hipster glasses and reads about math and programming because they don't lie to her. And also she angsts, because she can't believe even the lies she tells herself. PERF. I really love how she's introduced, too - clever and funny, as I'm coming to expect from this writer.

I wasn't sure what to make of #1, but this issue rocks my socks off. CARRY ON, AL EWING.

Hahaha that sounds like a hilarious dream.

I liked Carol fine, but I was so BORED by a lot of the last volume of Captain Marvel that I am reluctant to drop $4 a month for it now.

That's very cool. :)

Yeah, boredom was also a problem with the last volume. I just, IDK. DeConnick is just not writing a book I care about, I don't think.

That Loki book sounds FANTASTIC! Yay, comics! (I'm barely started but I felt the need for an icon overhaul so I switched out a bunch)

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I read The Hockey Fic about hanging hearts on whatever and GOOODDDDAMMMMMITTTTTTTT. *shakes fist at you*

Now I am going through your rec list. *shakes both fists at you*

I am LOVING Agent of Asgard. This Loki is quite close to myth!Loki, who will always be the Loki of my heart, and Verity is so awesome, I hope we see more of her.

The only one of those I read is Captain Marvel, and... yeah. The art is awesome (though I really liked Soy as well), but this and the previous run is the only ones about Carol I read, and I can't really find an in to her. It's like she ~could be a great character, but... she's not, not quite, not like this? Hmm. I liked DeConnick on Avengers Assemble, but not really on this one.

No in, exactly. I mean, she's basically the female version of all the stoic-and-heroic male superheroes that I can't find a way into, so if that's what DeConnick was going for, good job, I guess?

Yeah, basically. IDEK. It's nice and all, but I'm not really on board with it. I want to like her, but I don't really.

Yeah, when I occasionally manage to find a personality in DeConnick's writing of her, I just find her unpleasant! The bit in this issue where someone on Carol's team told her that something was a bad idea, and Carol's basically "And yet I'm going to do it anyway" just read as super reckless and arrogant to me. And yeah, I'm for female characters with flaws, but that happens to be a flaw that I have no patience for in any character, male or female.

Yup, exactly. I liked some of the introspection in the last run, but as soon as it digs into interpersonal relationships I sort of went ??? a lot. And yeah, there are some things that just rub me the wrong way, regardless of a chara's gender or whatnot.
