Guardians of the Galaxy!

I went and saw it! Clearly Marvel is doing something right, because they have gotten 100% of my theater dollars so far this year. (That would be for Cap 2 and this, mind.)

Unspoilery: I see the flaws, and yet, FUNNY SPACE OPERA. BE STILL MY HEART. I feel like I haven't seen a proper big-budget space opera since Revenge of the Sith. Can that be right? Woe.

Spoilery:
* That first scene, when Peter Quill turns on his cassette player and starts jamming through the alien ruins? That was when I was sold.

* Rocket completely stole the show all of out proportion not only to his size but the number of lines he had.

* PETER CALLED HIM RANGER RICK. You guys, I imprinted on that magazine. My childhood, let me show you it.

* Nebula's costuming and makeup: 5x better than anyone else's. SO good. Karen Gillan was quite good as well. "I hated you the least." *sob*

* The actual for-serious stirring speech and what not with Peter, I could have done without. Otherwise, though, Chris Pratt managed to charm me despite my antipathy to Representative White Male Protagonist.

* Also Peter gets menaced and pained in ways that spoke to me.

* It's too bad Saldana didn't get to be funny. Why doesn't the girl ever get to be funny?

* Gamora's character and backstory were interesting, but SO clunkily developed. She tells us she's betraying Thanos, but I assumed at first it was a trick, because we had no reason to believe her. And later, we get her whole backstory in exposition. Rocket's 30 seconds of drunken raving delivered way more punch.

* Also not well developed: Nova. Apparently they're important, because I've heard of the Nova Corps, but the movie did not in any way explain why they'd be any better suited than anyone else to take charge of an infinity stone.

* The music made me so happy, you guys.

I need an MCU icon, maybe.

EDIT: FYI, there's kinkmeme for Guardians of the Galaxy and other cosmic Marvel, including comics. Not much fic yet, but half of the prompts there are the most adorable kink prompts I have ever seen.

So disappointing! Especially since my first experience with Saldana was back in Center Stage and the whole POINT of her character was sassy-funny-rebel. So I know she can do it.

This film seriously made me so happy. Going out to see it again today!

People keep asking if I think it's the best MCU film. I keep saying: probably?, but Winter Soldier is my favorite (for now). I can watch it again and again.

(Shamefacedly knows I ought to start picking up comics but seriously where and how does one start a project like that? #woe)

You know, I don't honestly think it's the best MCU movie. I take issue with a lot of its handling of Gamora, for example, both form a gender perspective and from a "this just wasn't very well executed" perspective. However, it is possibly the MCU movie that I have most enjoyed.

(FWIW, I think Winter Soldier is actually the best MCU movie, barring possibly one of the Iron Man movies, although I'm not sure which one I'd give the nod to.)

I'm just getting started with GotG end of the comics myself, and can't help much except I hear the latest incarnation of the title is pretty good, and there's only like 15 issues or something so far.

As for comics in general, I would of course be happy to at least give you titles if you tell me what you're looking for. :DDD

After seeing it again (I'm always starry-eyed after a first viewing of most anything) I have to agree that it isn't the best - and that Gamora definitely could/should have been handled in a better way.

(Winter Soldier is the most satisfying emotionally for me - and it doesn't ever feel like our heroes are chasing a mcguffin merely because that's what heroes do, which is great.)

I know we discussed me starting with Sif? but that's all I remember.

Actually, regarding glowy mcguffins, I was much soothed recently to find out that actually all the glowy mcguffins we've seen so far are actually connected - the tesseract in Captain America and Avengers and the aether in Thor 2 are both infinity stones, like the purple stone in GotG. It's all a plot thread that's being built for Avengers 3. So it's not just that MCU is obsessed with glowy mcguffins, but that the obsession is for a reason. Which makes me feel better.

I can link you to a comics recs post I've made, here, but I can also give you better and more updated recs if you tell me what sort of thing you're looking for. Women? Fun? Angst? Particular kinds of art to look for/avoid? Worldbuilding? Stuff related to the MCU?

I try to keep up with comics but it's an impossible task other managable segments like Black Widow, Hawkeye, Loki, Young Avengers, etc.

However, I don't know where you live but if there a Books-a-million nearby? They put graphic novels on clearance and they're even cheaper than Amazon. I just look through the titles and pick out one that looks interesting.

One that piqued my interest a couple of years ago was
http://www.atomicempire.com/item.aspx?item=73894

It's the original runs so it's not what the film is based on, but it's interesting nonetheless. I really loved Quasar who wasn't even in the GOTG film but his dad has been mentioned on Agents of SHIELD. Then, there's Rocket Raccoon's origin story which is perhaps even more powerful today as it was then...it concerns corporations deliberately infantilizing a population in order to sell more toys and products.

If you don't live near a BooksAMillion, most comic book stores will have dollar bins or sale racks. Don't be afraid to explore and if you don't understand something in the comic, there's always the internet.

Your icon is super adorable!

I read Ranger Rick as a kid too. :)

I think I read that they used the Nova Corps more as the Xandar local space police, rather than general purpose space police? But I haven't read any Nova comics so I can't really compare properly.

Ooh, thanks for the link!

The anon meme was much livelier then, and there were more events.

Yeah, that seems accurate, although I don't have a great sense of what the Nova Corps are in the comics anyway.

As for my icon, Calvin and Hobbes forever. :D

Calvin & Hobbes are amazing, yes! :)

Sorry, what are you quoting from? I'm confused.

Dang it. Sorry, I didn't manage to c&p the thing I meant to c&p, which was you comment about Nova Corps. Instead I pasted the previous thing that I had saved. :P

Sometimes, I think the only time she's gotten to be funny was that time she slapped Jack Sparrow...I shall have to assume that we never saw her character again because AnaMaria went onto bigger and way more awesome things than Jack Sparrow and his mess.

Nova...
I feel...once again...like there were a lot of deleted scenes, not just not explaining Nova that well but Marvel claimed that the last scene of Agents of SHIELD would be connected to Guardians of the Galaxy so I looked for that stupid writing everywhere and the only thing close was the Nova outfits.

Still, I did like the fully intergalactic feel to the film especially John C. Reilly's multiracial family.

Yeah, the space opera aspect was a large part of the appeal for me, as well as the "misfits save the universe" thing.
