Drabble: The Game of Life

This wee, belated Xander/Anya drabble is for amory_vain in the Fall Fandom Free-For-All. Beware the angst. Angst and woe!

Also, Happy Thanksgiving! :)

The Game of Life
Anya, post-"Hell's Bells"

In a jewelry box on her dresser Anya keeps a small blue plastic geometric person. Blue: the person to ride next to her in the small plastic car, to make small pink and blue geometric babies with, to retire at Millionaire Estates with (or to Countryside Acres, because better there with Xander than anywhere else alone, even with money).

The blue person always gets in the car, she notes. Never jumps out again, either. That's why the game isn't actually life, whatever the name.

She returns the plastic person to the rings and clutter, fingers D’Hoffryn’s token, and begins to chant.

So sad.

Yes. I thought about writing a whole long series of Anya character study drabbles built around the Game of Life thing, because it seems so thematically relevent to Anya and all her hopes for being human (and also because the game itself is such a picture of the fabled American Dream, with all sorts of interesting assumptions built into it). But all I got was the one drabble. *g*

Poor Anya. This is clever and wistful (and makes me want to slap Xander a little bit. :P).

Yanno, of all the personal disasters in S6, the one that gut-punched me the hardest and the one I'm still most upset about was the Wedding That Wasn't. Someone gabrielleabelle, maybe?) recently had a poll about screw-ups in S6 on a 1-10 scale, and Willow's near world-endage didn't even cross my mind, whereas Xander jilting Anya got either a 9 or 10. 'Cuz in the Buffyverse, the world's always about to end, but personal relationships are important.

Glad you enjoyed. :)

Yes, it was gabrielleabelle with the poll. I agree with you; I had so much difficulty with Xander's actions from "Hell's Bells" and then after.

'Cuz in the Buffyverse, the world's always about to end, but personal relationships are important.

That is so well said that I will merely quote it and marvel at its perfection. *g*

Exactly this. I agree that HB was a gut punch and I can't watch it a second time except small portions. Watching Anya walk down the aisle in tears was for me one of the most heartbreaking moments on the show, especially after the earlier scene of her joyously jumping up and down "I get to be with my best friend forever!"

Ouch - she didn't just loose a fiance, a home, friends and source of income - she lost a BEST FRIEND.

So I am more compassionate towards him than I was when I first watched a few months back but I'm still unsatisfied with the fact that Xander's statements after leaving her at the altar are taken as truth: "that excuse gets old" in BY, and especially his "she ripped his heart out" speech to Andrew in NLM. Am i supposed to take that at face value? I think the writers mean for me to because it isn't contradicted but - WTF? He ripped HER heart out, not the other way around.

Yay! I had aspirations for something rather longer and much fluffier, but it didn't come through. I'm glad you enjoyed this, though. :)

Wonderful drabble. You managed to perfectly portray Anya's emotional state with few words. Poor Anya.
