the year in media

Things I read/watched/wrote/what have you in 2014!

1. Your main fandom of the year?
I really didn’t have one this year. I was pretty all over the place. Most active fandoms by number of fics include hockey (4), SPN (4), Marvel comics (3), and BtVS (3). If we’re talking word count, though, hockey wins (30k words).

2. Your favorite film watched this year?
In the the theater I saw two, both MCU: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. Of those, I think CA:TWS is probably the better movie, and it did a lot of things that made me happy, but GotG was more fun and also gave me a lot more fic impulses (not that I managed to act on any of them).

If we expand this to all films, though, then my favorite new-to-me movie this year was almost certainly Hanna, an intimate, stunningly shot and acted movie built around when initially felt like a pretty unlikely premise. It’s something special.

Honorable mentions go to Decoys, a horror movie enjoyably conflicted about its genre and the morality of its characters, and Zerophilia, which was 1000% cuter and less offensive than it had any right to be. They both had their flaws, but I had an awful lot of fun watching them.

3. Your favorite book read this year?
Probably a toss-up between Ursula Le Guin’s Left Hand of Darkness (which I wasn’t sure I liked initially but really grew on me afterward, the more I thought about it) and Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys, which had hands down the best language and character work of any present-day fantasy I’ve read in ages.

4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
I think I bought one new album the entire year, but it was Wovenhand’s self-titled album, and I liked it quite a lot, so.

5. Your favorite TV show of the year?
I watched very little TV in 2014. I did finish Carnivale, which I enjoyed immensely from start almost to finish (that final episode, ugh). I also enjoyed the first season and change of Babylon 5, which I still need to get back to. I have the next several seasons! It shouldn't be this hard!

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
HOCKEY. <3 <3 <3

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Probably comics fic fandom. I discovered some great individual fics (and had a few written for me), but by and large fic fandoms don’t exist for any of the comics I’m most interested in – Saga, FF, X-Force, current X-men teams (especially stuff centered around the Jean Grey School), maybe a couple of Image things. And I have a lot of trouble writing in a vacuum, in turns out. I would still like to make Saga fandom a little bit more of a thing than it is now, which seems like a reasonable ambition when the comic itself is such an easy sell, but otherwise I think I be giving on reading or writing in comics fandoms outside of YT and exchanges specifically for them.

9. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Geno Malkin, and it ain’t even close.

10. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
This year was kinda girl-light for me, and the girls I did enthuse about, I didn’t enthuse about for sustained periods. The female character I wrote the most often this year was Natasha Romanoff, though, across multiple canons, so let’s go with her.

11. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
When I realized someone had written me Saga mpreg for Yuletide, you pretty much could have heard my squeal of glee from space. And then I READ it, and my squee grew three sizes. But honestly fandom's given me lots to be excited about this year. <3

12. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I still miss Buffy. I wrote in it a little here and there – for femslash_minis and for [community profile] trickortreatex - but not enough.

13. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I look forward to poking my nose into the Raven Cycle fandom as soon as I finish reading the currently published books.

14. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
PENS-CANUCKS GAME. I’m going to see my Penguins live and in person, and I am SO EXCITED I can’t even tell you. Also I look forward to seeing various fannish peeps in the coming year; I know of three separate visits for sure, and there are several other people I am hopeful of meeting up with at some point.

In somewhat smaller excitement: the Stanley Cup playoffs (if we can come back from this tale of medical woe, I think we might go far this year), new issues of Saga, new issues of other comics I’m loving (Copperhead, Gotham Academy, Ody-C, Bitch Planet, Ms. Marvel).

I've never heard of The Raven Boys, but since the Kindle edition was 1.99 I just bought it.

The Left Hand of Darkness is dated in some ways, but it's still one of my favorite Le Guins, along with Tombs of Atuan and the second book in the Gifts series.

I somewhat startled myself by finally getting around to reading Middlemarch over the last few days of the year and being absolutely bowled over by it. I'm usually not a big classic novels person, but a lot of it hit me right in the solar plexus, though the punch was as much analytic as directly emotional.

UGH I think LJ ate my comment, so forgive me if this turns out to be a double post.

Hanna is such a great movie! The cinematography is crazy pretty, and I love how it feels like an action thriller and almost a fairy tale at the same time.

I agree, it's hard to find comics fic for specific, recent stuff. A lot of it is set either at a vague and ambiguous time or in a mashup of continuities. It's like that in DC fandom too, although they don't have super popular movies--it's more that people are frustrated by the reboot and the direction the comics have gone lately.

Nice little Left Hand...trivia bit here (really, it's a Joanna Russ trivia bit) http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/012974.html#547586

There is SO MUCH awesome hockey fic out there, I've begun to recognise the players in non-fic contexts.

Oh, that is a neat bit of trivia.

Hah, if you hang around here for very long, you will have hockey players foisted on you with some regularity. :D
