a question for my Buffy friends

Okay, I know that at least some of Spike's early S7 crazy is because of the First - we know, because we see the First talking to him as Buffy (and also Dru? It's been quite a long time since I watched those eps). But it clearly isn't ALL the First, because Spike can see both Willow and Buffy in Same Time, Same Place, which seems like supernatural crazy of a different kind. Right?

I guess I'm just confused as to how either soul-torment or First-torment would allow Spike to see realities other people can't. It sounds more like the kind of thing Dru could do, or possibly Glory's mind-suck victims. (Actually the main thing I'm getting out of this post is how messed up Buffy is in terms of its treatment of mental illness as ~magic.)

All of this gets me to: someone has written Dru visiting Spike in the basement, right? Maybe taking him away, even? They've never had so much in common, and she could take care of him now, in her very screwed up way.

I want this, guys.

Spike can see The First, because The First makes itself visible to him. Like it does to Andrew.

However, due to his newly souled status, it uses this to send him crazy - or at least, what seems like crazy to other people, since they can't see his invisible tormentor. (He's certainly not particularly mentally well-balanced, but observe the results The First accomplished with Angel back in Amends.)

I mean, being crazy doesn't automatically mean that you can see multiple realities, like Spike does in Same Time, Same Place. Does it? Is that what we're positing in the Buffyverse, that mental imbalance automatically comes with that ability?

No, I think that might be a vampire thing? Like he can tell that Ben is Glory.

Hmm, that explanation hadn't occurred to me. Good thought.

Spike seeing Buffy and Willow at the same time in 'Sam Time, Sam Place' had nothing to do with The First - it was Willow's spell. Her spell stopped Buffy, Xander and Dawn from being able to see her, because she wasn't ready to see them, so they cancelled each other out. Spike wasn't part of the spell, so he was able to see both of them, and was able to figure out that something was wrong, probably a spell of Willow's that went crazy.

Not saying that the idea that The First didn't royally screw with Spike, but that scene was down to Willow's inadvertent meddling.

Ah. See, this is what happens when I ask these questions after having not watched the ep in a while.

(Also, J2 in Canucks jerseys!! My fandoms are collided!)

While I agree that the magical mental illness thing is inconsistent and troubling, I don't think that Spike's mental problems are what's a play in the instance you're talking about. It's just that Willow's inadvertent spell doesn't make her invisible to Spike. Or to Anya. She isn't afraid that they will reject her, is my guess. She's just made herself invisible to Buffy, Dawn, and Xander. Everybody else can see her just fine.

So, Spike might be crazy — as he himself says — but that's not why he can see Willow. Willow just doesn't care enough about him to hide from him.

Dru coming to "rescue" Spike in S7 is a fine idea. I will think on that.

See, this is what happens when I ask these questions after having not watched the ep in a while. That makes perfect sense.

Surely someone has written Spike+Dru in early S7, but if I've read it, I've forgotten.

I can't think of any. I like to think I've run across most of the good stuff, but you never know.

There's just so much fic for this fandom - impossible to know if we've found it all.

*cries about everything*

I think that the others already answered your question. Basically Buffy and Xander couldn't see Willow because of Willow's spell and Spike wasn't affected by it, because she didn't care to hide from him.

Anyway I've always being interested in Spike's mental problems in the first half of S7, but they dismiss them so suddenly and Spike's mental situation is just sketched, never fully developed. Personally I'd like to make the reunion between Dru and Spike happen in my Dru fic, but I'm still at S2 so it will take time.

Yeah, she could take care of him. I've always believed that she took care of him in many ways and they were very functional as a couple even in their twisted way. Dru would understand. (As Buffy, I think. Is anyone in the Buffyverse never been affected by mental illness?)

S7 is terrible about what exactly was going on with Spike and which of his issues was due to what external interference. That exchange between Robin and Buffy lampshading it is funny, but does not fix the problem.

IDK how well Dru would actually take care of him according to our sensibilities. She would be most solicitous according to hers, though.

I loved Spike in early Season 7 (and all the rest ;)) Dru coming for him at that time would have been magnificent. They were always such an interesting couple, and in that case, Dru could become the caretaker, and Spike's angst and indecision would be all the more amplified.

I adore Dru/Spike. I really have room for only one Spike ship aside from Spike/Buffy, and Spike/Dru is it.

What a great question, and convincingly answered, too! Plus, about one of my favourite episodes, that I watched a bunch of times without ever asking myself that... (If "someone" writes that fic, there's the problem that Spike gets saner as much as he gets away from the hellmouth)

That's true, which makes the idea of Dru coming and taking him away even more interesting. It's fun to think about.
