Marvel after the war

I said I was done with Marvel, but now there are tons of new titles coming out this fall, and I have to at least rubberneck.

* Spider-Woman - I have no Jess feeling, but the pregnancy plotline for a female character is just a leeetle overused, don't we think? More importantly, how is this the cover. How. This isn't even a challenging pose; she's just STANDING. With a BROKEN BACK.

* A-Force - I read an issue of this via Secret Wars (although apparently it's getting rebooted RIGHT AWAY, and seriously, how stupid is the reboot stuff yet? HAVE WE REACHED REBOOT STUPIDITY HORIZON). It was cute? IDK, team of entirely ladies to protect island entirely of ladies; hard to go completely wrong.

* All-New Wolverine - by which we mean X-23, it looks like. I'm a bit leery of this book because authors tend to go the angst porn route with X-23 in ways that make me uncomfortable. We'll see.

* ULTIMATES - aka Al Ewing's new book featuring much of his Mighty Avengers team, YAY. Unrelated to the Ultimate universe, afaik; there are, after all, only so many superlatives to go around. I just read all of his Captain America and the Might Avengers run this weekend, and it was utterly delightful. Can't wait for more. And as you see on the cover, MONICA RAMBEAU HAS HER DREADS BACK.

* Uncanny X-Men - so apparently Psylocke+Fantomex+some other baddies vs the world is just a long-term thing now. I mean, I'm not complaining. (Except, ugh, Land. WHY. WHY.) I still need to finish the rest of Spurrier's X-Force, now that it's all up on Marvel Unlimited.

* Old Man Logan - okay, this is just me being uninformed, but Wolverine is dead now, right? So who's Old Man Logan?

* Extraordinary X-Men - "Featuring adult Iceman, Storm, Colossus, Magik, Old Man Logan, teen Jean Grey and Nightcrawler." Okay, that could be a pretty great team, yeah? Fairly old school. Possibly lots of fun. And Jeff Lemire is writing, of whom I've heard good things? Although less for his team books.

* Ms. Marvel - still! \o/ Good job, Marvel.

* The Mighty Thor - Same Thor team, same Thor lady, All-New All-Different title! I got bored of the lady Thor book because it was like 80% fights, but it was really pretty. I might check it out in trade.

* Captain Marvel - Female writers + art by Kris Anka. I have basically given up on Carol; I didn't enjoy KSD's treatment of her at all. Maybe I'll like this better? The cover is great, at any rate.

Uhh that Spider-Woman cover is not only ugly, but also strikes me as patronizing. Particular with the added tagline of "Parent by day. Hero by night."

And I know exactly how you feel about the general portrayal of X-23. But obviously it's impossible to write an angsty female character without a lot of sex being thrown in the mix. I mean that's the kind of thing that women angst over, right?

...sorry, I need to go rein in my sarcasm ;)

Yeah, I didn't even actually read the teen hooker parts; I just heard of them. But from the very beginning, Laura's story is about destroying female agency, even when it makes no sense - her mother, a RESEARCH SCIENTIST, is forced to carry her to term by her employers because you know, she's a woman and she's there.

Not to say there might not be merit in those stories, but I wasn't able to stomach more than a couple of issues of Liu's run before I gave up.

I do wish we'd gotten more meat in the Black Widow + X-23 teamup issue. That was such a waste.

Yeahh.. from the very first get go back in the few issues of NYX, between the hooking and the self-mutilation... it seemed a very lame way to handle what could have been a character with a lot of potential.

Just like you said on the Black Widow team-up. Could've had a lot more potential there.

Yeah, I mean "teen girl with powers and issues" is right up my alley. And yet.

I don't know, I definitely like the lineup for Ultimates and Ms. Marvel is a MUST Read and the New Avengers has a nice lineup, too, but...

I fear Marvel has dumped some of dynamics and characters I cared about most like Lucky the Pizza Dog and Verity Willis.

Yeah. Honestly I've dropped most Marvel books already anyway, and Mighty Avengers was the one I was really going to miss out of the bunch. But we get Ultimates instead! So I don't mind that too much.

HAVE WE REACHED REBOOT STUPIDITY HORIZON
Right? I saw they were putting out A-Force #1 again and I was like, how can it POSSIBLY BE that they need two #1 issues within like 6 months? :P

I feel like I should be excited about Laura Kinney getting to be the new Wolverine, but the preview images left me feeling kinda meh about it. I love Laura and I think it's totally fitting that she should get to be the one to pick up Wolverine's mantle, but I feel like his costume looks weird on her and Marvel has now done the "Popular superhero is replaced by friend/sidekick/significant other/mystery being" so many times now I'm getting bored of it.

Legacy heroes definitely need an additional shtick at this point. :P

I think Uncanny X-Men is the only one I'm interested in (and Ms Marvel, but I only read that in trades).

Man, and I cannot begin to guess why Uncanny X-Men is the one you're interested in. :)
