2015: the year in media

Things I read/watched/wrote/what have you in 2015!

1. Your main fandom of the year?
Definitely hockey RPF. Pens hockey, specifically. :DDD

2. Your favorite film watched this year?
Absolute fave, adored WITHOUT RESTRAINT was for sure Mad Max: Fury Road. I left the theater literally grinning because I was so happy I couldn’t stop. I haven’t loved a movie that much, especially a theater release, in a long, long time.

Honorable mention goes to The Force Awakens, which in most years probably would have won – it was a very enjoyable movie and a worthy installment of the franchise, which, let us be clear, is pretty high praise.

3. Your favorite book read this year?
Toss-up between Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie and Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge.

4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
This year was my year of Nicki Minaj. Favorite songs were “Starships,” “On Your Knees,” and “Feeling Myself.” So, the happiest party song EVER and the two songs off her latest album that sound most like porn. >.>

5. Your favorite TV show of the year?
I guess it has to be Agent Carter, since that’s the one show I managed to watch all of this year.

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Bruins hockey, I guess? I wasn't really looking for a second eastern conference team, but this one sort of grabbed me by the metaphorical lapels and wouldn't let go. Also, everyone in the tiny fandom is super nice and enabling. I'm having a lot of fun so far.

Also, between cons and reading for the Hugos, I have rediscovered my love of original SFF and science fiction in particular. That's been a really neat and unexpected development.

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Probably how terrible the Pens have been this season. They currently have a better record than their play over the first 30 games or so has deserved, so they still have a chance at the playoffs, but they need to pick it up in a hurry. This was not the season we expected after picking up Phil Kessel.

Also, Saga has been a mix of not-relevant-to-my-interests and deep unhappiness/frustration. It has not been a great Saga year.

9. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
Yeah, still Geno.

And especially

10. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
I haven't been very fannish about many female characters in particular this year. Probably Furiosa, just on the basis of loving her so much in the movie.

Oh, or possibly The Brand, who is perfect. She is perfect.

11. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Probably going to the Pens practice and being so close to everyone and then getting Jeff Zatkoff to sign my shirsey. (Yes, I know he's had some bad games for us this year, but I've always been fond of him, and he was SUPER NICE.)

12. The most missed of your old fandoms?
I had a fair bit of SPN nostalgia this year, which I guess is proof that I am well and truly out of that fandom. Also proof: the difficulty I had writing anything for it when I was supposed to, after having signed up for things out of the afore-mentioned nostalgia.

13. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Yeah, I've got nothing. I want to keep doing hockey and reading stuff for the Hugo awards, out of which I wouldn't be surprised to get another Yuletide fandom or two.

14. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Finishing some of my big writing projects. OH, and reading the two (!!) new China Mieville novels that are coming out next year! He hasn't published a novel since 2012, and it is about freaking time.

I finally saw Mad Max on the plane a few weeks ago, and it somehow exceeded the hype. A MOVIE THAT EXISTS.
