Drabble: Leveled

Leveled
For cindergal: Xander, Spike

Three weeks after, Xander went to the Fish Tank. The wall-staring and the sobbing and the snot made Anya – healing, thank God – a little frantic. Also, beer: the Harris family anaesthetic of choice. And Buffy was no more absent there than anywhere else. So he went.

But Spike was there, too, wrapped in cigarette haze, cue in hand. Still creepy, toothy, leathered. Evil. But with eyes as empty as Xander felt.

Wordless, soundless, Spike held the other cue out to Xander. And, because the reason Xander’d hated him was dead; because here was a man(/monster/whatever) who understood, he took it.

Ow. It's a bad situation when these two find common ground.

Loved the little aside about a healing Anya made frantic from his obvious grief.

Yep. I was actually surprised how hard it was to find a way to make this prompt (Spike and Xander play pool) work. I don't have much trouble thinking of situations to get them friendlier than in canon, but they mostly take longer than 100 words.

And yeah, poor Anya. She had a hard enough time dealing with her and the Scoobs' reactions to Joyce's death, much less Buffy's.

Damn. Stop it! I'm expending my weekly quotient of sighing here.

*sigh*

Oh, our two boys.

Well done, dear.

I'm sorry! Yesterday just seemed to be the day for writing drabbles about grief. But, um, I'm glad it was effective. :)

Oh, that's lovely. I loved the two of them during those pre-Gift days, and this is a great continuation of that. Thank you!

Yay, I'm so glad you liked it! I really do love brief moments of understanding, like they had in "Spiral."

Ouch.

This hurt in all the right ways.

*uses Buffy icon because it's not about her yet it still is*

Oh yes, definitely all about Buffy.

I'm glad this was the good kind of hurt. :)

Besides, Buffy was no more absent there than anywhere else. That is a perfect line. Really, really perfect.

I can see this. I can't normally see in-canon Spike and Xander being friendly. But their mutual grief? Makes it believable. Nicely done.

Actually, I was surprised at how hard it was to find a way to make the prompt (Spike and Xander play pool) work. I don't have much trouble thinking of situations where they're friendlier than in canon - in Seraph, for example - but those situations mostly take longer than 100 words to get me there.

Lovely and sad. Nice job. A good look at a painful time, and in such a few words. :)

Wow, thank you! That means quite a lot coming from someone who is so very good at saying things in so few words.
