summergen recs

I have a goal this summer to read or at least try all the summergen fics. Hence, occasional recs! (Anon, because authors aren't revealed until the end.)

I See My Light Come Shining (From the West to the East) - post-S8, 9.4k words
Wingfic! Somehow this has become a favorite trope of mine; I think it ties into my interest in body horror/general weirdness. "My body is doing what?" Anyway, post-S8, Sam starts growing wings in a very well-reasoned, plot-relevant way. (Hint: Lucifer.) These is a creepy, low-key story with a really striking finish. Kevin is great in it, too - so cranky and surly.

Would You Walk to the Edge of the Ocean - S2, two parts
It's like... temporary curtainfic? After Folsom River Blues, the boys' friend Deacon sends them to a beach cabin to lay low for a while. You guys, I loved this SO MUCH. This is a fic with no easy answers, no easily defined emotional beginnings or endings, just moments that roll together into something bigger, maybe.

Sam and Dean's dynamic is wonderful: caring about each other, but still talking past each other. And though they don't get each other a lot of the time, they're not picking at each other, either. Sam's studied calm, impervious to Dean's questions and apparently weird hang-ups, is a thing of beauty.

The author uses the setting to great effect, too: there's this sense of time slowing down, of plenty of space and quiet, letting the boys think through and talk around things they haven't been able to for a long time.

This is one of my favorite fics that I've read this year, I think, definitely one of my favorite Sam-and-Dean centric. It helps me remind what I loved about those early seasons. I can't recommend it enough. GO READ.

Would You Walk to the End of the Ocean was so fabulous. The characterizations and the insights into Sam and Dean were spot on and the OCs were fantastic. What a great bit of fic. I loved it.

SO GOOD. It's hitting a spot for me that hasn't been hit in a *long* time, like that big genfic binge I had when I first got into the fandom.

I was reading Would You Walk pretty much at the same time as you - your comment only showed up for me after I'd posted mine. I agree with every word.

I realize we're like, MILLENIA away from this, but now I just want author reveals so I can rush off and friend this person. And then read all the things they'e ever written.

I'm halfway through it! I think I'm going to need to read it twice, because I'm not catching everything the first time through. I think it will reward the reread, though.

Thank you so much for taking the time to rec. I've been swamped with To-Do tasks and reading time is so limited; but now I can pluck a few gems and be rewarded.
