comics read, 10/8/13

Saga #7-9, Vaughan, Staples
I liked the first volume of this well enough. I didn't fall in love with the characters, but I did enjoy the gorgeous art.

But this second volume? I keep having to put it down because I love it SO MUCH. I love Alana: "Cool. I'm so glad I got to do all this in a towel." I love how she and Marko's dad come to terms within like half an hour. I love that Alana apparently went around harassing everyone with her romance novel. (I'm tickled we get to see the Alana/Marko backstory.) And then GWENDOLYN. Wow, she is gorgeous. (Spoiler: everyone in this comic is gorgeous.) And practical, and competent. And well-dressed. And then there was the bit where The Will goes back for the slave girl, and The Stalk shows up, and I thought it was real. And then we save the slave girl for real, YAYS.

And I seriously think the art is better than it was last time. I think this is partly down to how much I like the colors - the browns and greens inside the rocket ship made me so happy, and The Will's dream is all really bright, like Starburst flavors, and his ship is something else again, mostly pastels, but warm, very comfortable. And the faces, and the expressions.

I love this comic so much, you guys. I am incoherent with joy. And one of these days, I have to actually finish this trade so I can figure out what to request for Yuletide.

Young Avengers #1-5 - Gillen, McKelvie
I reread the first two issues, which I still really enjoyed, but then did not enjoy the next three quite as much. IDK. I think reading this one digitally helps slow me down more so I pay better attention to the details? It helps pacing, I think, maybe. It felt like #3-5 were mostly action, and not enough character stuff.

I also am not quite sure where we're trying to go with Loki. I know vaguely about Gillen's Loki run of Journey into Mystery, and we get a quick summary here of how it ended, but I'm still not sure how I'm supposed to feel about him. I mean, ideally I would like him to be not evil, but I can't even decide where on that spectrum we're trying to play him. I can't figure out where on that evil/not-evil spectrum the narrative lies. He's fun, though. He gets a lot of the best lines. But then he goes manipulating Teddy re: Billy and Billy re: Teddy, and not always even to any clear purpose. IDK. There's a difference between ambiguous and muddled, you know? And right now I'm feeling he's in the latter camp.

I think I'm going to have to look up America Chavez; I have no context for her, except that she's apparently from an alternate universe. She's clearly awesome, though.

I thought the Stalk coming back was real too! And Gwendolyn and Slave Girl are my favorites. And the ghost babysitter girl, and Lying Cat. Actually no, maybe just everyone. I am never quite sure how much I like Saga, but I do really like how it manages to make all the characters so compelling, even the "bad" ones.

ETA: Making yuletide decisions is sooooo hard. I have most of a first draft of a letter done but I keep waffling, there are so many options!

I will just say right now that Prince Robot is not my favorite. I can see how he's stuck between a rock and a hard place, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. But otherwise, yes, I see what you mean. :)

I know! I have 3/4 of the letter done; it's just waiting for me to figure out what I want from Saga. (Front runner at the moment: slice of life.)

Slice of life in Saga sounds amazing, their lives are so wild it could almost get you anything.

That's good to know about YA! I'll just hang on until I can get ahold of that next trade. I think it comes out in January.
