Marvel's July solicits

Full solicitations listing here.

- Oh look, yet another artist for X-Men. Matteo Buffagni, whom I'm not familiar with but whose work looks fine. That's six artists in 17 issues, unless I've missed one: Coipel, Lopez, Dodson, Anka, Mann, Buffagni. That seems excessive. I'd care more if the writing hadn't become such a complete train wreck.

- Rock He-Kim is back on X-Force; apparently the Jorge Molina issues were just fill-in. Feh.

- I know just enough about Runaways to be mad about the Avengers Undercover solicit.

- Meanwhile, the solicit for Black Widow:
• On a snowy night in Prague, Natasha must fight her way out of disaster alongside the WINTER SOLDIER!

Given... events, I wonder if this is flashback issue, or...?

- The Moon Knight cover is sooooo pretty.

- IDC about Cyclops, but "Young Cyclops has space adventures with his space pirate father" is the kind of premise I can get behind. Also, Greg Rucka. I await reports.

- Has anyone read any of the new Wolverine & the X-Men? I got reeeally tired of the old one, but the new looks to be putting more emphasis on characters I care about while toning down the zaniness a lot.

Can I ask what happened to the writing in X-Men? I think I'm only up through issue #5. (I don't mind spoilers though.)

It's really tempting me too. I feel like I should cut down on my pull list, but Greg Rucka is so amazing.

Avengers Undercover is the new Avengers Arena, yeah? I think I'm missing something, why is that solicit terrible?

Alex, the evil dead black kid? IDK, I have friends who stopped reading Runaways because the one black character died, and I hadn't even realized he was evil at the time. It's possible I am reacting to things that haven't been spoilers for ten years or more.

Well, it was only a matter of time before Winter Soldier made an appearance in Natasha's book. *sigh* It's probably not a flashback. Given how things ended between them, I really hope this is handled well. If she falls into his arms like nothing happened, I will be SO PISSED.

Gorgeous cover, though.

Can you tell me exactly how things ended between them? All I know is he had her mind wiped somehow? So I assumed that meant she wouldn't even know who he was, but this solicit suggests not.

I don't think Edmondson is going to take a "falls into approach" with Natasha and any guy; I don't think this is that kind of book. I do hope he handles things well, though.

Basically, Natasha was captured by a super villain who wanted to get back at Bucky because reasons. Super villain wiped Natasha's memory and made her think she was back working for the Red Room. Bucky moped around for a few issues because ITS ALL HIS FAULT. Super villain was defeated, and SHIELD discovered that all of Natasha's memories could restored except her memories of Bucky. When Bucky was informed of this, he told them to stop trying to restore Natasha's memories because 'she's suffered enough.' He then sped off on his motorcycle giving an angsty monologue, leaving Natasha alone in the hospital. He then spent the next few issues moping around and getting into bar fights until the comic was cancelled. At no point was Natasha consulted about her missing memories, nor did we ever get her perspective on anything. She had maybe five lines in the entire arc. It was gross.

Edmondson doesn't seem keen on writing a romance, so this issue probably won't bring them back together, but I hope Bucky's shitty behaviour is addressed.

Hmm. Okay, so it wasn't that Bucky actively had them removed, which was what I'd understood. That's slightly better. And obviously SHIELD is partly to blame, because it's not like what happens to Natasha is solely Bucky's call.

Still, yeah, that would have made me quite upset, too, especially with zero input from Natasha on the whole thing. :P

I would venture to say that Edmondson doesn't seem too keen on putting much focus on Natasha's prior relationship with *anyone*. That doesn't seem to be his style (somewhat to my disappointment).

That whole arc was awful. The writing was lazy and didn't make sense half the time. What's more, Hawkeye and Captain America and Wolverine appeared and Clint and Steve did nothing but pat Bucky on the back and say "we're here for you man, let's get your girl back." Only Wolverine seems actually invested in finding Natasha because he values her as a person. She wasn't a character for that entire arc, she was a brainwashed prop for Bucky's manpain. It was all of Brubaker's worst writing habits rolled up into a shitty arc.

Daredevil will be most likely be appearing in Black Widow #7, so since he's also Natasha's ex that could give us an indication about the direction Edmondson wants to go with Natasha's relationships. This could be the "Everyone From Natasha's Past Gets a Cameo!" arc.

Yeah, that all sounds pretty terrible awkward. It's such a bummer that the Winter Soldier premise really interests me, and of course I love Natasha, and yet almost of the canon is bearable. :P

In the issue after that arc ended, Bucky broke into Natasha's old safe house and slept in her bed because "the sheets still smell like her." And it was portrayed as romantic and tragic because manpain. Yeeeeah.

Edit: Edmondson has since teased that "other familiar faces" will be appearing in issues 6-12 of Black Widow. I'm guessing one of them will probably be Clint Barton, given that Edmondson said this in a response to a question about Clint. So this does seem to be the "Exes Cameo!" arc.
