comics news ahoy

The big news is that there's going to be a new Thor, and it's a woman. No, I'm not really clear on what that means, either. No, I don't know why her armor has boobs. No, I don't know why, if you're going for a Thor legacy hero, Sif wouldn't be your first pick.

What I do know: that gives Marvel eight, count 'em eight female-led titles. Dude. I also know that I am stoked. (Although I'd be a little more stoked if that Esad Ribic art on the left wasn't just a teaser. I want him on a female-led title, darn it!)

Also, Marvel's October solicits are out today, and mostly they're fairly meh. Wow, another event? This latest one is still going on! Also a mini chronicling the aftermath of Wolverine's death, immediately following the mini that chronicles his actual death! Wow!

HOWEVER. Two things that I do care about are: Kamala + Peter Park team-up in Amazing Spider-Man, ohhhhhh, I want ALL the Kamala teamups. And secondly, Natasha + X-23 team-up in Black Widow. Girl friendship! Bonding over assassin pasts! GIMME.

I'm super excited for X-23 to be in Black Widow, too. :D

You know, I remember reading an article somewhere online (IO9? AV Club?) in the relatively recent past about that sort of armor-- basically it argued that the boob- places make no sense as protective clothing. It was really very interesting. Gah, I just can't remember where I read it!

I read that too, or at least a linked post on Tumblr. They were talking about armor and saying part of the shape most real armor is for structural integrity, and to deflect or turn aside weapons.

And structurally the 'boob bumps' deflection may actually direct a weapon in towards the wearer's vulnerable chest/breastbone area, and can increase the force or pressure of the blow so that it has the power to pierce the armor or shatter the bone. D:

At least that was the gist as I understood it. There was SCIENCE! behind the explanation, and the article iterated the problem I've always had with most "fantasy" women's armor, namely: instead of offering protection, it would actually hinder the wearer's ability to survive a battle.

Yeah! That was the one! I don't remember reading it on tumblr, but I I'll bet it was linked. It made so much sense!

Yeah, I read that article, too. I want to have it sent to every single one of these comics artists. :\
