ugh Marvel why

I haven't been bothering to keep up with Marvel news because this "Secret Wars" thing looked so profoundly stupid, but recently I stumbled across the June solicits, which are chock-full of just about the most bewildering, unappealing, commercially unviable new titles I've ever seen (in my vast experience of slightly less than 2 years in comics). This morning my fav retailer columnist, Brian Hibbs, went into a lot more detail about exactly what those titles are and what the general Marvel strategy seems to entail, which confirms all my fears. And finally here's a list of things that will for sure be canceled as part of the Secret Wars event, although some of them will get relaunched. (For example we already know the Captain Marvel book will, and there's a new book called Thors, except it doesn't have Russell Dauterman on it, which was that meandering, story-less book's saving grace.)

Just. Why. It all just looks like such a mess, and I don't in the least understand why anyone thinks that I as a consumer would be remotely interested in trying to keep track of it all. Does management really have so little idea of how unappealing and bewildering and off-putting it all is?

My decision earlier this year to drop Marvel for being just not worth it: confirmed so, so hard.

I don't know. I do know that I agree with you. Completely confused, so much so that I just don't care any more. I'm down to one Marvel title now. I'll stick with it until it (inevitably) gets cancelled. Then I'm done.

Yeah. I have a handful of subscriptions still going right now, half of which will be gone, it looks like, once the dust settles. So after that it'll be me and Ms. Marvel, and that's it. God bless Image, is all I have to say.

I never got too deep into either of the Big 2 superhero universes, in part because of those never-ending crossover events, that inevitably boded ill for the fringe-y characters I did care about. It's probably been over a decade now, and I'm still grudgy about "House of M" swallowing up District X.

Since Hellblazer whimpered to a halt, I don't have a monthly pull and I've gotten out of the habit of visiting my comics shop. If you're in a reccing mood, what have you been reading lately that might be fun to pick up in trade? Maybe something with a female protagonist and non-cheesecake-y art?

Are we talking the Big Two? Gotham Academy from DC and Ms. Marvel from Marvel are two of a kind: teenage girl adventure books that are as cute as they can be. GA is ghost story/mystery (in a boarding school, no less), while Ms. Marvel is more about finding your place in the world (particularly when you have unexpectedly acquired superpowers). I should say I'm not sure the first trade is out for GA - I just bought issue #5 a couple of weeks ago.

Outside of that, everything I've really been excited about lately has been from Image. Copperhead is female-lead space western, and I think its first trade should be out soon, if it isn't already. Saga continues to be both traumatizing and fantastic. Bitch Planet is too new for trades, but it's extremely socially aware dystopian stuff about a prison planet for women. If you like the Gillen+McKelvie team, you might also check out The Wicked + the Divine, which is them doing their thing.

Thanks for the links. Yeah, most of the Secret Wars sounds confusing and like they are taking things I would normally like and just...taking them in really bizarre and unappealing directions.

Yeah. Is there anyone excited about this? I have not met them yet.

With Marvel I tend to read more of the solo comics than the team ones - like Black Widow, Hawkeye, Ms Marvel - because I find a lot of the big crossover events confusing. I like some of the team runs, like Secret Avengers, when they're self contained. I enjoyed Age of Ultron, but I got frustrated trying to keep track of it, Battle of the Atom was handy with the chapter on the front of each cover, and if they're only across a few comic titles I can read them if them affect my solo comics or ignore them as I choose. This big event affecting everything across the board? And all the new titles that'll be cropping up? Makes comics seem less fun and more work. I want to keep reading my solo runs, and I hope they don't mess with those too much, but I think I'll be taking this opportunity to cut down the number of Marvel titles on my pull list.

Meanwhile Image, keep doing your thing.

Yeah, if I could just ignore the ridiculousness and focus on the titles I care about, it'd be okay, especially since, like you, my favorite titles tend to be fringe ones. But a problem I keep having is that those fringe titles are the ones that tend to get canceled, which just get more frustrating every time it happens. :P

Meanwhile Image, keep doing your thing.

Yup. Basically all my dollars are going to Image now.

I don't want to get sucked into the Battleworld stuff either, but I think Black Widow is at the very least, meh.

Image is getting so much money from me lol. Also have you heard that Lazarus is now in the works to be a tv show (along with Sex Criminals)? I'm going to be optimistic - Orphan Black has given me unrealistic expectations of tv now, ha. All the meta they could do with Lazarus though like the adverts on the back of the comics - tv ads and sponsorship from the families, and, yes, teeny bit excited.

I HAD NOT HEARD ABOUT LAZARUS. I loved the issues of Lazarus I read, and then I... haven't ever gotten back to reading more, oops. But Forever was so wonderful (and I shipped her and Joaqim like a house on fire). That could be really cool if it's handled right.
