comics read: She-Hulk, Magik

She-Hulk #1-12 (Soule, Pulido/Wemberly)
I wish, I wish this had been illustrated by someone I liked better. I find Pulido's faces to be actively off-putting, likewise his anatomy in action scenes, which is some cross between silly putty and someone that hasn't gotten past drawing circles.

That said, the comic itself definitely found its feet as it went on. Angie Huang is WONDERFUL - far and away my favorite thing about the comic. She stole every scene she was in. (Also she reminded me of a good friend from school, in both features and demeanor, which was a bonus.) And the lawyer talk was great, primarily because knowing that it was written by a lawyer, I was willing to believe it. Sometimes authorial, uh, authority can go a long way.

OTOH, I was so bored by the Captain America plot that I skimmed all the flashbacks and a lot of the courtroom speeches. I also didn't like Patsy Walker at all, or maybe I just didn't like her treatment.

Magik #1-4 (Claremont, Buscema)
This is the Magik miniseries from the 80s that gave her a plot and defined her character, and holy cow, this was brutal, emotionally and narratively. The stuff Illyana goes through in limbo is just horrifying, start to finish, and it was really tightly written, which made the horror and trauma all that much more effective.

Really enjoyed the relationships between all the female characters in this - Illyana and Cat and old!Storm. They all have important and generally positive relationships with one another even though they're all so horribly, deliciously screwed up. (Poor Cat. D:)

So it was really good. I recommend it.

Magik 1-4 has really stuck with me since I first read it in the late 80s. Most X-Men have painful stories in their lives, but hers was particularly tough, I thought. I'm glad you're reccing it.

It's not just painful, but it's so condensed, story-wise. The reader doesn't have time to get distracted by anything else. Poor Illyana. :(

Exactly - it packs such an intense punch!

Yeah, the art for She-Hulk was kind of wonky. It also sets kinda weird expectations to have those pretty Kevin Wada covers and then have the art be such a total shift stylistically.

Also: ILLYANA <3

Yeah, the Wada covers didn't help - they're so distinct from each other.

And yes, I have finally read the Illyana series!
