Yuletide Recs, vol I

My focus this Yuletide has been largely space stuff, stuff with lots of focus on female characters, or both, which informs most of this list. (I have been having the BEST time, too. I'm going to use this strategy every year.)

Dune - Frank Herbert
Serendipity - Chani/Irulen, 26k.
I did not know I needed epic plotty Chani/Irulen, but here it is, and it makes me SO HAPPY. The fic fleshes them both out and then brings them together in very satisfying ways. Seriously, if you want space politics and femslash, this is the fic for you.

Jane the Virgin
triangles and parallelograms - Jane/Petra/Michael/Raphael, 18k
This starts with a marriage of convenience plot twist absolutely worthy of this ridiculous show, and ends with charming romance and hot sex in various configurations. No one gets left out! Also the narrative voice made me CACKLES, multiple times.

Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Vorkosigan's Viper - Aral Vorkosigan/Ges Vorrutyer, 1.5k
This is a very twisty, careful AU where Ges marries Aral (not really by choice) and then proceeds to make himself Aral's right hand man, politically, in combat, and everywhere else Aral didn't realize he needed a right hand man. AND it does this via a/b/o (which, let's be honest, is how I found it in the first place).

Saga (Comics)
people, not places - Gwendolyn+Sophie, Gwendolyn/The Brand, 4k
This is the story of how Sophie ended up Gwendolyn's page, and what came after. This really captures how I see these two together - prickly and often at odds, made unsettlingly equal in some ways because of Sophie's background, but still bound together by the fundamental responsibility and care Gwendolyn feels for Sophie. It also had me howling with laughter in places.

don't need to be saved - The Will gen, 1.3k
The Will lies in the hospital and remembers a lot of things. This is a series of flashbacks - to his childhood with his sister, to his time on the ship with Gwendolyn and Sophie - and they are beautifully and precisely written. Sometimes things get billed as character studies just because nothing happens in them, but this feels like it has a lot of movement, despite the structure.
