Drabble: Old Habits

I've been wanting to write Giles/Faith forever, and the still_grrr "Het Pairings" prompt was a great excuse.

Old Habits
His definition of Faith is bound in coils of cigarette smoke. Its fragrance hangs about her always, reminding him of younger days, the fumes of other fires, and magic more exotic than hers, if less deep.

But she is Slayer, leather-feathered mother hen to thousands, and he is Watcher, who watches more papers than battles now. He’s given over to bureaucratic hazards, his smoking habit discarded with those other youthful idiocies.

Still, he passes her and knows the acrid scent: the whiff of temptation.

It’s when her eyes hold that same smoky invitation that he thinks he might give in.

Lovely. Giles/Faith is a pairing I rarely considered until recently, and am now wondering why it took me so long!

I know. Never even crossed my mind until I read the second trade volume of S8, and then the fabulousness of the ship pretty much smacked me in the face. I hope to write a lot more, but this is a start, anyway.

Glad you enjoyed. :)

Oh, that's fascinating. Giles and Faith are such an interesting pairing.

Definitely. They've never had a lot to do with each other directly, but there's a lot of shared history and experience, and a lot of things in common from even before they met.

You might just have convinced me of Giles/Faith.

*\o/* *\o/*

This pleases me very much indeed. They have all sorts of potential, I think, and it's largely unexplored by fandom.

Eeee! You wrote F/G!

And beautifully too - rhythmic and poetic. I loved 'leather-feathered mother hen' for both the image and the sound. And smoke as the gateway to intrigue and memory is a beautiful device.

Finally, I did! I've been wanting to for ages, but felt a little intimidated - I didn't know where to start. And I confess, the Rulesverse intimidated me a bit, too, because it's so good. Such a standard for comparison!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, particularly the smoke conceit. I sat down determined to write something about them, and that was the image that presented itself.

You should write more: there is a worldwide shortage of F/G, dammit!

Indeed. Just what I said to myself last fall, when I wrote my request post. :)
